Indianapolis Roofers: Trends to Avoid and Why

When it comes to your home’s roof, you know you need to make sure it’s strong and will hold up in severe weather. Indianapolis roofers know that your roof is your home and family’s first line of defense when storms hit. You can’t rely on roofing trends to keep you protected when the hail and wind start up. Instead, you need to rely on tried and true roofing methods and materials.

Indianapolis roofers will be able to help you find the perfect roofing solution and system for your home. As you think about the roof you want installed, you might come across some trending materials and methods of roofing. Below is a list of trends that you need to avoid during your roof replacement or roof repair:

Multiple Layer Roofs

Many roofers, when replacing a roof, will simply roof over the existing shingles. While this isn’t always an issue for a single layer, it becomes a major issue when there are 2 or more layers. In an effort to save time, money, and resources, roofers will simply roof over the existing layer, rather than scrape the old layer off. If this process is repeated too many times, your roof will become heavy and more prone to damages. Further, if a layer has a leak or is damaged, then those damages don’t go away by covering them with a new layer. Instead, they can become worse over time, leaving you, your family, and your home vulnerable.

Green Roofs

If you are looking for a more eco-friendly roofing option, consider metal, slate, or clay tiles. These three options are known to last a long time and are often made of recyclable materials and can themselves be recycled. The green roof that you may need to avoid is a plant-based roof. While these roofs are great for the environment, they may not be great for your home. These roofs are fine for those in the process of building a home because your roof and underlayment can be easily adjusted to support the weight of a plant roof. However, if you are replacing your roof, it isn’t recommended that you use a green roof because of the additional updates your home must undergo. Instead, opt for one of the other many green-friendly options available.

Single Ply Roofing

You might be persuaded by the cost of single-ply roofing, but the truth is, you won’t get the coverage or protection you need. Single-ply roofing is comprised of insulation, a roofing membrane, flashings, and adhesives. The membrane is attached to the roof decking using the adhesives. The issue is that this method does not provide your home with the secure protection of other roofing materials. If you are looking for a similar look or appeal, then consider a sheet metal roof that provides you with the streamlined look and enhanced protection.
